1 Year 6 – Curriculum and Important Information – Autumn Term 2017
Please find below information on topics we are covering this term, and other important information. Please read carefully, especially the important dates/events section. With your help and support we look forward to a magnificent term. Curriculum Areas RE – Children will be studying the topics ‘Beginning with the Church’ followed by our ‘Advent to Christmas’ topic after the half term. (We are following the resource framework for RE in Catholic Schools in the Diocese of Westminster by Dr. Margaret Carswell). English – Class novels: The Silver Sword and Goodnight Mister Tom. Reading, writing and grammar tasks will be based around the novels. Maths – See overleaf for Maths topics this term, including key vocabulary Science – ‘Living things and their habitats’ and ‘Light’. Computing – ‘E-safety’ and ‘Images, Video and Animation’ History - WWII DT /Art– WWII art Music – Songs for the term: “I’ll Be There” and “Classroom Jazz” French – Topic: “Le Weekend” (hobbies and activities) PE – Ball skills, netball, tag rugby Important General Notices/Info PE Kit – all classes do PE on Monday afternoon. Please ensure kit is always available, and clearly labelled. Reading – ‘the rock of all learning’. Please encourage/listen to your child read as much as possible at home. Spelling – spelling lists will continue to be handed out on a weekly basis and the children will be tested on these in class. Uniform – as the children are in Y6 and are role models for other children in school, please ensure children wear the correct uniform at all times including their hats to and from school. NAMES – please put your child’s name on their uniform, PE kit, footwear, lunchboxes and any other school items to avoid them being lost Class Equipment – please encourage your child to begin taking more responsibility for bringing all the correct items to school. This is a crucial skill the children will need to develop for high school and the wider world. Homework – all encouragement and support welcomed at home. Please help to ensure homework is brought to school when required and encourage children to follow the homework timetable. Abbey Mass – children should meet their teachers from 8:30 (no earlier) in the Bulbeck room and parents are always needed to help walk year 6 children back to school. You help is very much appreciated. IMPORTANT: Other items of interest/key dates..... 15th Sept – 6HD Abbey Mass 22nd Sept – 6CR Abbey Mass 21st Sept – PGL Parents’ Information Meeting at 2:30pm 2nd Oct – 6th Oct - PGL Trip to Osmington Bay 20th Oct – Harvest Celebration Mass at Abbey and finish for half term 31st Oct – Back to school 1st November – 6CR class assembly 9:00am 8th November – 6MK class assembly 9:00am 15th November – 6HD class assembly 9:00am 21st November – WWII Day 20th December – finish for Christmas break Additional dates will be provided on the parent calendar and made available on the school website. Please be aware of any extra letters that may be sent home with additional dates. HIGH SCHOOL NOTICE We are aware some of your children will be attending high schools for open days and entry tests this academic year. Though your child may incur absences as a result, we politely remind you that where possible, children should return to school before/after school visits to reduce the amount learning they miss. School should also receive an absence note. This is also the same for any medical appointments etc.

Maths topics that will be studied this half term Working with 6-digit numbers 1-place, 2-place and 3-place decimals Converting fractions to decimals Addition of whole numbers and decimals Missing number problems Finding missing angles and lengths Using brackets Converting grams to kilograms Converting lengths Finding time intervals Subtraction strategies Decimal subtraction Multiplication using mental strategies Short and long multiplication using the grid method Negative numbers Comparing fractions Fractions and mixed numbers Addition and subtraction of decimals Area and perimeter Finding volume Nets Multiplying and dividing fractions Key vocabulary Equivalent, inverse operation, order of operations, brackets, powers, time intervals, tetrahedron, prism, 2D shape names including: rhombus, kite, parallelogram etc
