This chapter examines perfect competition, one of the market structures that exists in the U.S. It is characterized by a large number of small firms, each of which produces a small amount of the total good in the market. 3 Competitive Firm A perfectly competitive firm is one without market power: It is not able to alter the market price of the good it produces. It is a price taker.
