Importance of the presence of gastric varices along the cardia (GOV according to Sarin et al22) with or without associated esophageal red markings, for prediction of the risk of GI bleeding, as observed in 93 children with biliary atresia who underwent upper GI endoscopy showing esophageal varices at a mean age of 38 months. In 20 of the 26 children who bled, endoscopy was performed a median of 6 days after bleeding.
