2 40 % of the land in the U.S. is publicly owned,meaning tax payers support the various types of land use Major US Public Lands include: National Resource Land – Managed by BLM National Parks and Monuments- National Parks System National Wildlife Refuges- US Fish and wildlife service National forests – us forest service Indian reservations- bureau of Indian affairs Military installations – department of defense

3 National Resource Land
269 million acres of land BLM Mission: It is the mission of the Bureau of Land Management to sustain the health, diversity and productivity of the public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations. Administered by the Dept. of Interior Includes: energy and minerals (=300 additional acres subsurface) Forests,woodlands timber, forage wild horse and burro populations fish and wildlife habitat wilderness areas archaeological, paleontological, and historical site

4 National parks and monuments
81 million acres Administered by dept. of interior Over 400 natural, cultural and recreational sites; land is used for recreation and aesthetic values; hunting, mineral extraction and logging are permitted

6 National wildlife refuges- 92 million acres
Managed by fish and wildlife (interior) Used mainly for Wildlife conservation and research Other uses: Breeding grounds scientific research hunting, fishing livestock grazing, farming mining for oil and gas

219 million acres – managed by us forest service (agriculture) Recreation and commercial uses National forests and grasslands Established in pinchot 1st Chief
