B – If possible number 14 pupils to act this scenario out, otherwise use 14 whiteboards. Get each student to hold a whiteboard with their number displayed on it. C and D – Draw this scenario on the whiteboard and cross off the numbers.

2 A Last Person Standing Who is the last person left standing?
Twelve people (numbered 1 – 12) are standing in a circle. The first person sits down and then so does every second person until there is only one person left standing. (ie: 1 sits, then 3, then 5 and so on) Who is the last person left standing?

3 B Last Person Standing Who is the last person left standing?
Fourteen people (numbered 1 – 14) are standing in a circle. The first person sits down and then so does every second person until there is only one person left standing. (ie: 1 sits, then 3, then 5 and so on) Who is the last person left standing?

4 Can you spot any patterns?
Last Person Standing C Can you spot any patterns? Can you predict the number of the last person standing if you followed the same process with 16 pupils in a circle?

5 D Last Person Standing Who is the last person left standing?

6 What would happen if there were
Last Person Standing Extension What would happen if there were 30 people standing? 90 people standing? An odd number of people?

7 Answers B – For 14 pupils, 12 is the last person standing
A – For 12 pupils, 8 is the last person standing B – For 14 pupils, 12 is the last person standing C – For 16 pupils, 16 is the last person standing D – For 20 pupils, 4 is the last person standing
