1 The “How” of Love 1 John 4:13-21 May 16, 2010
1 John The Abiding Life The “How” of Love 1 John 4:13-21 May 16, 2010

2 1 John 4:11-12 11 Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. 12 No one has ever seen God; if we love one another, God abides in us and his love is perfected in us.

3 1 John 4:13-16 13 By this we know that we abide in him and he in us, because he has given us of his Spirit. 14 And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent his Son to be the Savior of the world. 15 Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in him, and he in God. 16 So we have come to know and to believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and whoever abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him.

4 1 John 4:17 17 By this is love perfected with us, so that we may have confidence for the day of judgment, because as he is so also are we in this world.

5 What if you lack confidence?
3 Options that won’t work… Option #1 – Attribute your lack of love to your personality or upbringing. Option #2 – Focus on making others easier to love… Option #3 – Focus on your lack of love…

6 But I, blameless monk that I was, felt that before God I was a sinner with an extremely troubled conscience. I couldn't be sure that God was appeased by my satisfaction. I did not love. No, rather I hated the just God who punishes sinners. In silence, if I did not blaspheme, then certainly I grumbled vehemently and got angry at God. I said, "Isn't it enough that we miserable sinners, lost for all eternity because of original sin, are oppressed by every kind of calamity through the Ten Commandments? Why does God heap sorrow upon sorrow through the Gospel and through the Gospel threaten us with his justice and his wrath?" This was how I was raging with wild and disturbed conscience.

7 1 John 4:18 18 There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love. “You cannot love God if you are under the continual, secret suspicion that he is really your enemy. We cannot approach him in love and hide from him in fear at the same time.” - Walter Marshall 1692

8 Option #4 – Believe and walk in the Gospel
1 John 4: There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love. 19 We love because he first loved us.

9 1 John 4:20-21 20 If anyone says, “I love God,” and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen cannot love God whom he has not seen. 21 And this commandment we have from him: whoever loves God must also love his brother.
