1 Mind Stretcher Write one sentence that uses the following 3 key terms: Prokaryote, nucleus and eukaryote EX: Eukarotic cells have DNA contained in a nucleus, while prokaryotic cells have DNA that floats freely in the cell.

2 Color the Cell parts & Label them!!
Cell Wall- dark green Cell Membrane- Orange Cytoplasm- yellow Nucleus- purple Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER)- red (label both smooth & rough ER) Golgi Body- brown Ribosomes- black Chloroplast- light green Mitochondria- dark blue Lysosome- light blue Vacuole- red/orange (large one in plant cell)

3 These Cell Books will STAY in CLASS!!
Cell Booklet Setup On the inside of the first page, cut and paste the round animal cell. Write ANIMAL CELL as the title on p.1 On Page 2, cut and paste the rectangular plant cell. Write PLANT CELL as the title on p. 2 Write your first and last name on the front cover and give it a title! You may use colored pencils! Keep the other half of the sheets in your NB!! These Cell Books will STAY in CLASS!!

4 Mind Stretcher -11/14 What types of cells differentiate to become specialized? (have specific jobs) Cells of multi-cellular organisms Prokaryotic cells Cells of unicellular organisms Which of the following would you NOT find in a bacteria cell? DNA Nucleus Cytoplasm

5 Video Clip Intro- Biology: Cell Structure

6 Discovering the Cell- Notes on Organizer
Each day we will focus on a few organelles and take notes on this organizer: Cell Membrane, Cytoplasm & Nucleus Then you will use that information and transfer it to your Cell Booklets (these stay in class!) Study your notes EVERY night…You will have more info added each day! Ch. 3-2 QUIZ over organelles is THURSDAY!!! No retakes!

7 Did You Know? We are made up of microscopic living things called: CELLS There are Approximately 100 TRILLION cells in the Human Body. 100 Trillion

8 The Organelles Cells are made up of different parts called organelles and each one has a specific function! The Organelles: Nucleus Mitochondria Cytoplasm Endoplasmic Reticulum Ribosomes Golgi Bodies (Apparatus) Vacuoles Lysosomes Cell Membrane Cell Wall Chloroplast

9 Cell Membrane Function- To protect the cell and allow things IN and OUT. Analogy- A Cell Membrane is like a FENCE. Found- Animal & Plant Cells

10 https://youtu.be/LKN5sq5dtW4

11 Cytoplasm Function- Gel-like fluid found all throughout the cell; All other organelles are suspended (floating) in it. Analogy- The Cytoplasm is like Jell-O, constantly moving & swishing around Found- Plant & Animal Cells

12

13 Cyto + Plasm = Cell Shape
Cytoplasm Means… Cyto = Cells Plasm= Shape Cyto + Plasm = Cell Shape

14 FYI: Cytoplasm Cytoplasm is basically the thick gel like substance that fills the cell sometimes called cytosol. It helps move materials around the cell. It contains enzymes, fatty acids, sugars, and amino acids that are used to keep the cell working.

15 The Nucleus Function- DNA (our genes) is found here. It directs the cell’s activities and houses the nucleolus. (Tells all the other parts what to do! ) Analogy- Acts like the Brain Found- Animal & Plant Cells

16 Found INSIDE the Nucleus!
Nucleolus Found INSIDE the Nucleus!

17 These Cell Books will STAY in CLASS!!
Cell Booklet Today-11/14 Top of page 3, label the organelle: Cell Membrane Bottom organelle on p. 3: Cytoplasm Label top of p. 4: Nucleus Use your notes and textbook to complete the function for each. Draw a picture of each on the animal and plant cell on pages 1 & 2 AND in the rounded square boxes on p. 3 & 4 Create your OWN analogy for each using example below: Analogy: The (insert organelle) is like a ( ) because the (organelle)&(function) just like the ( ) does….. Ex: The cell membrane is like a fence because a cell membrane lets things in and out of a cell just like a fence lets things in and out of a yard. These Cell Books will STAY in CLASS!!

18 Mind Stretcher – Copy bold
Which organelle is large in plants and stores water and other materials? Which organelle digests food particles, wastes, cell parts, and foreign invaders? Which organelle hooks amino acids together to make proteins? Vacuole Lysosome Ribosomes

19 AC Analogy Explanations…
Analogy: The (insert organelle) is like a ( ) because the (organelle)&(function) just like the ( ) does….. Ex: The cell membrane is like a fence because a cell membrane lets things in and out of a cell just like a fence lets things in and out of a cell. 20 Discovering the Cell- Notes on Organizer
Each day we will focus on a few organelles and take notes on this organizer: Mitochondria, Ribosome, ER Then you will use that information and transfer it to your Cell Booklets (these stay in class!) Study your notes EVERY night…You will have more info added each day! Ch. 3-2 QUIZ over organelles is THURSDAY!!! No retakes!

21 Mitochondria Function- Performs respiration which breaks down sugar to produce energy! (In the form of ATP) Analogy- “Power plant” of the Cell Found- Animal & Plant Cells

22 FYI: Mitochondria They are very small and cells may contain several thousand of them. It all depends on the cells needs. If the cell feels it is not getting enough energy, than more can be created. Food such as glucose (sugar) is broken down into carbon dioxide and water which releases energy. (Cellular Respiration!) We breathe in oxygen to help this process.

23 Where are the Mitochondria??

24 What does it look like on the inside?

25

26 Ribosomes Function- Makes protein out of amino acid. All cells need protein to function! Analogy- Ribosomes are like a Protein Factory Found- Animal & Plant Cells

27 Where are Ribosomes located?

28 Endoplasmic Reticulum
Function- Carry/delivers proteins and other cell materials from one part of cell to another. Two Types- Smooth ER and Rough ER Rough E.R. has Ribosomes Smooth E.R. does NOT have Ribosomes! Analogy- Like Roadways/Highways Found- Animal & Plant Cells

29 Where is the Endoplasmic Reticulum?
Rough E.R.? Smooth E.R?

46 Mind Stretcher - What types of cells differentiate to become specialized? Cells of multi-cellular organisms Prokaryotic cells Cells of unicellular organisms What would most likely happen if a cell’s mitochondria were not functioning properly? The cells would use lysosomes to release energy The cell’s level of ATP would decrease. The cell’s level of sugar would decrease. Which of the following would you NOT find in a bacteria cell? DNA Nucleus Cytoplasm

47 “Who am I?” Mind Stretcher- Copy
Found only in plant cells, I'm green as can be. I make food for the plant Using the sun's energy Who am I? Answer on back of page: __________________ Chloroplast

48 Mind Stretcher - Chloroplasts, Cell Wall, Large Vacuoles Cellulose
