1 Briefing: Leverage HPE Storage Solutions in Windows/Hyper-V
Rambo Wang Technical Marketing Engineering, HPE Storage

22 July 2018 HPE 3PAR Solutions for Windows/Hyper-V HP Confidential

3 Offloaded Data Transfer - ODX
ODX allows Hyper-V and OS to move storage faster and more efficiently Enables protocol and transport agnostic, cross-machine storage subsystem assisted data transfer Practically eliminates load on the server, enables a significant reduction in the load on the transport network, and presents an opportunity for innovation for the storage subsystem. Used for VM Migration, VM Instantiation, General Bulk Data Movement (such as Large Database Files, HD Video, etc.) File Copy Request Array–Offloaded Copy SMB File Copy Request Advantages No application-specific transport bottleneck Host minimally impacted by shuffling of bits Host and transport network (SAN) offloaded Storage systems can provide innovation and further improve experience Time required for data movement can be significantly reduced or even eliminated Minimal (if any) changes required to apps No changes to OS security model - can leverage existing policies and administration practices Performance Considerations Array Model - Different disk array models have different amounts of cache available for copy operations and hence will show different performance. Number of Physical Disk Drives - The number and type of drives will influence the speed with which the array can copy data internally and hence more disk and faster drives will improve performance. 4 HPE CLX Live Migration and Automatic Recovery
Live Migration of VMs on Cluster Shared Volumes between sites Fully automatic failover in case of data center or component outages Live Migration of Virtual Machines across data centers with HPE 3PAR Cluster Extension & Microsoft Hyper-V

5 CSV Support with CLX for Windows
VM Config File Virtual Machine HP CLX Cluster Shared Volume All Physical Disk resources or a Cluster Shared Volume depend on a CLX resource Very smooth integration

6 3PAR Peer Persistence for MS Windows
Available since 3PAR OS A Active LUN presentation Standby LUN presentation Hyper-V VM Clustered Application S What does it provide? High Availability across data centers Automatic or manual transparent LUN swap Transparent Live Migration between data centers How does it work? Based on 3PAR Remote Copy and MS MPIO Presents Active LUN paths as active and Standby LUN paths as standby Automated LUN swap arbitrated by a Quorum Witness (QW Linux MS Hyper-V VM on 3rd site) Supported environments: Windows 2008 R2, 2012 R2, 2016 Standalone Servers and Windows Cluster Hyper-V Requirements: Two 3PAR Disk Arrays with loaded license Two RC sync links (RCFC or RCIP) 3PAR OS ≥3.2.1 Hyper-V MS Windows Failover Cluster A Data Center 1 P HP 3PAR Synchronous Remote Copy + Peer Persistence host mode persona 15 must be configured on the 3PARs for these Windows servers P A LAN/WAN Witness QW DC 3 HP 3PAR Data Center 2

7 Peer Persistence for MS Windows
Never lose access to your volumes Windows Server Failover Cluster Each host is connected to each array on both sites via redundant fabrics (FC or iSCSI or FCoE) Synchronous copy of the volume is kept on the partner array/site (RCFC or RCIP) Each Volume is exported in R/W mode with same WWN from both arrays on both sites Volume paths for a given volume are “Active” only on the array where the “Primary” copy of the volume resides. Other volume paths are marked “Standby” Both arrays can host active and passive volumes Quorum Witness on 3rd site acts as arbitrator in case of failures Fabric A Fabric B Up to 2.6ms RTT latency Vol B sec Vol B prim B B A Vol A prim Vol A sec A Hyper-V Active Path Vol A Active Path (Vol B) Passive/Standby Path Hyper-V VM Clustered Application QW 3PAR Array Site A 3PAR Array Site B Site C
