Summer Work Review Fall 2017

Big Idea #2 Biological molecules utilize free energy& molecular building blocks to grow, to reproduce, and to maintain homeostasis How do heterotrophs capture free energy present in carbon compounds produced by other organisms? Pg 25 Living systems depend on properties of water that result from its polarity and hydrogen bonding. Provide some examples that support this claim. Pg

Big Idea #2 Biological molecules utilize free energy& molecular building blocks to grow, to reproduce, and to maintain homeostasis Organisms must exchange matter with the environment to grow, reproduce and maintain organization.       3. Molecules and atoms from the environment are necessary to build new molecules Support the above statements with your understanding of the biogeochemical cycling and properties of water. Pg 28

Big Idea #2 Biological molecules utilize free energy& molecular building blocks to grow, to reproduce, and to maintain homeostasis 4. Cell membranes are selectively permeable due to their structure. a. cell membranes separate the internal environment of the cell from external environment b. Selective permeability is a direct consequence of membrane structure, as described by the fluid mosaic model. c. Provide examples to support claims a & b pg 31

Big Idea #2 Biological molecules utilize free energy& molecular building blocks to grow, to reproduce, and to maintain homeostasis 5. Growth and dynamic homeostasis are maintained by the constant movement of molecules across membranes. Passive transport does not require the input of metabolic energy; the net movement of molecules is from high concentration to low concentration. Support this claim with your knowledge of passive transport. Pg 32

Big Idea #2 Biological molecules utilize free energy& molecular building blocks to grow, to reproduce, and to maintain homeostasis 6. Active transport requires free energy to move molecules from regions of low concentration to regions of high concentration. Support this claim with your knowledge of active transport.

Big Idea #2 Biological molecules utilize free energy& molecular building blocks to grow, to reproduce, and to maintain homeostasis 7. The processes of endocytosis and exocytosis move large molecules from the external environment to the internal environment and vice versa, respectively.  Support this claim with your knowledge of cell transport.

Big Idea #4: Biological systems interact, and these systems and their interactions possess complex properties 8. The subcomponents of biological molecules and their sequence determine the properties of that molecule. Structure and function of polymers are derived from the way their monomers are assembled. Support the statement with evidence. Pg Directionality influences structure and function of the polymer. Support this claim with evidence

Big Idea #4: Biological systems interact, and these systems and their interactions possess complex properties 10. The structure and function of subcellular components, and their interactions, provide essential cellular processes. (Ribosomes, ER, Golgi Apparatus/Complex, Mitochondria, Lysosomes, Vacuole, and Chloroplast) pg 82

A laboratory assistant prepared solutions of 0.8 M, 0.6 M, 0.4 M, and 0.2 M sucrose, but forgot to label them. After realizing the error, the assistant randomly labeled the flasks containing these four unknown solutions as flask A, flask B, flask C, and flask D. Design an experiment, based on the principles of diffusion and osmosis, that the assistant could use to determine which of the flasks contains each of the four unknown solutions.
