2. What is phonics?
Phonics is a way of teaching children to read quickly and skilfully. They are taught how to:
- recognise the sounds that each individual letter makes;
- identify the sounds that different combinations of letters make - such as ‘sh’ or ‘oo’; and
blend these sounds together from left to right to make a word.
Children can then use this knowledge to ‘de-code’ new words that they hear or see. This is the first important step in learning to read.

9. Phonics Screening Check
The phonics screening check is designed to confirm whether pupils have learnt phonic decoding to an appropriate standard. It will identify pupils who need extra help to improve their decoding skills.
The check consists of 20 real words and 20 pseudo-words that a pupil reads aloud to the teacher.
Year 1 children complete in June. Year 2 children who did not meet required standard also take the check.

10. Spelling End of Year Expectations
Year 1 – 6 have clear spelling expectations. In Year’s 1 and 2 these are taught inline with their phonics lessons.
Year 3 – 6 use Spell Zoo resources to learn, practice and experience the meanings of spellings.
