Natalia Arteaga

2 Mamani Mamani’s Pachamama Del Sol Y La Luna
Natalia Arteaga When colonialism arrived to the Andes region of Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Argentina, and Chile, the Catholic religion was implanted on Andean Indigenous people, among them, the Quechua and Aymara. The Andean Cosmology was based on the balance between human beings and their surroundings. Agriculture was the main form by which Andeans sustained themselves and their families. The interpretation and combination of both Catholic and Andean religions was then assimilated. Natives were to believe their Gods were the same as the Catholic divine figures. The “Pachamama” or mother earth has since been associated to Virgin Mary. Mamani Mamani exposes the mixture of both Religions and Cultures in “Pachamama Del Sol Y La Luna” (Mother earth of The Sun and The Moon) Pachamama (Mother Earth): source of everything that was harvested by the Andeans. Represents nature and the palpable bond between humans and their Gods. Here at the middle of the painting, it represents the balance between the sun, the moon, and human kind. For the Andean indigenous people, It also symbolizes the Virgin Mary, mother of Christ Mama Killa (The moon, wife of Inti): Goddess of wishes, fears and temptations. Represented in a light blue in the painting to be differentiated from the sun, Inti Inti (The sun): son of Viracocha, creator of the world, who was associated to God. It represents the main source of energy, vitality and health for the crops, strongly venerated and feared Long black hair, possibly braided. Culturally, Aymara indigenous women braid their hair and let it grow. The length and color shows their health, vitality, and is a proof of respect and devotion to their culture The Andean mountains: the landscape around the Andes is surrounded by differently sized mountains, expressed in the painting though various colors and shapes Jesus Christ: in this case, it could be associated to the harvest, food, life, and love, proof that the Gods are pleased. Overlooking the city and the havvest process Amaru (Serpent): God of all water sources that irrigate everything that is harvested. Communicator between the Gods. Here, underneath the painting, it represents the everlasting presence and need for water to survive Roberto Mamani Mamani (1968) Roberto Mamani Mamani is an Aymaran native, born and raised in Cochabamba, Bolivia. His artworks, mostly done in Oil Pastels, represent different Andean indigenous symbols, as well as their culture, and religion. Strongly devoted to represent his indigenous background, Mamani Mamani paints in very colorful shadings and abstract shapes, which he describes as “Andean Cubism”. Andean Cubism: artistic movement similar to Braque and Picasso’s Cubism representing landscapes through different mixed round and angular shapes. Mamani Mamani, presents through Andean Cubism different Andean landscapes, mixing different shapes and forms. Works cited: Diaz, Fidel. Mamani Mamani: Un Condor Sobre el Illimani.
