1 Private Clubs are places where members gather for social, recreational, professional, or fraternal reasons.

2 Out of 14,000 private clubs in America, 6,000 of them are country clubs.

3 Generally, country clubs include golf courses, a clubhouse, locker rooms, bars and restaurants and some with banquet facilities.

4 There is an initiation fee - some as much as $250,000 - for many country clubs. This is just to become a member.

5 Private clubs may also charge member monthly dues regardless of member usage.

6 Other types of private clubs include city clubs, professional clubs, athletic clubs, dining clubs, military clubs, yacht clubs, fraternal clubs and proprietary clubs.

7 Clubs are much like hotels in that a general manager is responsible for planning, forecasting, human resources, F&B operations and facilities.

8 However, general managers in clubs report to (and is employed by) a Board of Directors, made up of members.

9 Golf clubs employ a golf pro who is responsible for organizing tournaments, fundraisers on the golf course, and employing golf caddies.

10 Private clubs members often feel a sense of entitlement and ownership. They are likely to return to the club weekly, even daily.

+1 Hawaii’s oldest country club is Oahu Country Club off Pali Road in Nuuanu.
