1. Symbolism: the use of symbols to express or represent ideas or qualities in literature, art, etc. (example: the rain is a symbol for sadness) 2. Direct characterization: the author tells the audience what the personality of the character is. 3. Indirect characterization: the author shows how the character acts/behaves through: speech, thoughts, actions, looks 4. Utopia:  a community or society possessing near perfect qualities 5. Dystopia: an imaginary place where people are unhappy and usually afraid because they are not treated fairly
