Materials Needed Norton Journals Vocabulary: Latin Roots Bell Work: In the spirit of Oedipus Rex, try to answer the following riddles: You will always find me in the past. I can be created in the present, But the future can never taint me. What am I? Find the number that best completes the following sequence: 1, 2, 4, 7, 11, _____, 22 Find the pattern: Tabitha likes cookies but not cake, mutton but not lamb, and okra but not squash. Following the pattern, will she like cherries or pears (and why)? Homework: Study for Quiz over Oedipus Rex tomorrow. Finish question four.

6 Groups of Four ( ) Using what we have read thus far, list the line numbers for every instance of foreshadowing from Teiresias and Creon. Then, explain what you believe the purpose of such prophecies is. Do they say something about Oedipus? About the themes of the play? About human nature? Be as clear as possible. List line numbers for every reference you can find regarding light, brightness, sight, darkness, blindness, night, and day. Then, explain again what you believe the purpose of such references is, i.e. why Sophocles would want to include such a motif. List as many religious allusions as you can find. Then, explain which God(s) are invoked with the most frequency and why you believe that to be the case. What is Oedipus’s hamartia in this scene? List line numbers as evidence of any character flaws, or cite the tone of a particular passage. What does Oedipus say to Teiresias that may have angered the Gods?
