7 Two Axioms of Fundraising

8 First axiom of fundraising
The number one reason people do not donate money is: No one asked them!

9 Second axiom of fundraising
If you ask for advice: You may get money!

10 Karin’s third axiom Relationships!!
As in success in developing a well-functioning care team As in the success of a clinician in joining with a patient to impact health The secret is: Relationships!!

11 with a potential funder to achieve mutually shared goals
Karin’s fourth axiom You already have the skills! Learn to readjust skills to another goal Instead of joining with a patient to achieve health/life goals, you are joining with a potential funder to achieve mutually shared goals

12 The language of shared goals

13 Shared goals Empowering parents as their child’s first (and most important) teacher Supporting children in achieving their best potential Working towards improved kindergarten readiness

19 Hospital/clinic system opportunities
Develop relationships You want to be able to share/explain: Elevator speech What is ROR Why your clinic does this What difference does it make to the families you serve?

20 Elevator speech Mission: Reach Out and Read gives children a foundation for success by incorporating books into pediatric care and encouraging families to read aloud together Elevator speech: Our medical providers prescribe books and encourage parents to read aloud with their infants and toddlers

21 What is Reach Out and Read
Early literacy promotion program: Our clinicians encourage parents to talk, sing and play with their babies, starting at birth. Books are added at the 6 month visit Our clinicians use the book to assess the child’s development, family dynamics, and teach parents how to engage with their infants and squirrelly toddlers

22 Why does your clinic do this?
Our clinicians and staff understand: The first five years of a child’s life offer a critical window for brain development Success in school and life starts in infancy by empowering parents in supporting their child’s development

23 Why does your clinic do this?
“We love to see the smile on a child’s face when they receive a book” Our ROR program brings joy to our clinic families and to our staff

24 What difference does ROR make
Possibility of changing the trajectory of a child’s life (Dipesh story)

25 What sets ROR apart from other programs that give books?
We are a parent empowerment program that uses books to teach parents how to engage with their infants and toddlers
