Task Card One Do all animals have the same life cycle?
Casey Williams & Claire O’Connell

Curriculum Science Understanding - Biological science – year 2 – Living things grow change and have offspring similar to themselves - (ACSSU030) Teacher note: Print off slides 5-10?? in A3 before beginning lesson and slides 13 and 14, one for each student.

Engage Allocate parts of the room to yes, no and not sure. Ask students, Do all animals have the same life cycle? Then ask students to choose an area on what they think the answer is. Explore While students are standing ask, why they think that particular answer. Teacher should ask not sure group first, then no, then yes group, so students don’t change their opinion on account of another student’s ideas. Create a mind map of students answers.

Explain [BEFORE LESSON] Print off the following 4 slides in A3 (Animals that grow up, Amphibians, Complete metamorphosis, Incomplete metamorphis). Also print off pictures of the different animals and cut out each one individually. Place blu-tac on the back of each one. In class after the mind map activity, place each sign on the board, explaining each one as you put it up. Stick all the animals to the side of the board and ask a student to come up and place an animal on the board they feel it belongs to, then have the student explain why they chose that. Ask the rest of the class if they agree and their opinions. Choose another student and repeat, until all animals are placed on a category. Students will need to analyse the picture and conclude for themselves which category they feel is correct.
