3. Uses of Coltan in everyday life
Coltan is a metallic ore also called columbite- tantalite
When it’s refined it becomes a heat-resistant powder, which can hold a high electrical charge.
Electronics:
Cell phones
Laptops!
Pagers!

4. How mining and using Coltan harms the environment
Excessive mining and erosion of the land is polluting lakes and rivers and smothering the organisms that live in the water.
This has a chain reaction on animals higher in the food chain.
It is being mined in the jungle of the Congo in Africa, and in order to mine the Coltan, hunters/miners kill Gorillas and other wildlife.

5. Impact on society
Rival militaries wage war on each other.
Innocent people in various villages are also being affected with this conflict by loss of resources and death.

6. What companies and governments are doing to address the problem
The United Nations is developing a certification scheme to stamp out the trade of “dirty” or illegally mined materials.
Developed countries are also putting pressure on the industry to buy “clean” materials

We think there should be a law to stop the collection of “dirty” raw materials. This would insure that nothing is harmed in the process of mining coltan.
