Refer to the map located on page 239 of your textbook to answer the questions on the next slide. Work together to find the answers. Write answers in your notes under today’s heading.

8 Early Greeks – Map Activity
Use one sentence to describe the geography of Greece. Greece is a mountainous fractured peninsula with many islands. Where are the Ionian Sea, Aegean Sea, and Mediterranean Sea located in relationship to Greece? The Ionian Sea is to the west of Greece, the Aegean Sea is to the east, and the Mediterranean Sea is to the south.

9 Early Greeks – Map Activity
Look at the physical features of Greece and the surrounding area and hypothesize what economic activities you believe ancient Greeks had? Ancient Greeks were fishers, sailors, traders, and farmers. Why do you believe that the ancient Greeks were able to grow wheat, barley, olives, and grapes in Greece’s rocky soil? The peninsula of Greece has a favorable climate.

10 Early Greeks – Map Activity
How might Greece be affected by the surrounding water? Land travel might be limited, the climate might be positively or adversely affected, and occupations of the people might be ocean-related, such as sailing and fishing.

11 The Minoan Civilization
Refer to pages of your textbook to answer the handout questions on Minoan civilization. Pick one person in your team to read the passage on the Minoans. Everyone else will listen to the reading and when you hear the answer to a question, stop the reading and make sure everyone in your group writes it down.

12 Minoan Civilization Where did the Minoan civilization develop in Greece? On the island of Crete.

13 Minoan Civilization What was the main economic activity of the Minoans? They traveled by ship to trade with other countries. What do historians believe happened to the Minoan civilization? Either it was destroyed by an earthquake and the resulting tsunami or the Mycenaean attacked and destroyed it.
