Long-axis sonogram of the upper midline neck. The echogenic anterior surface of the uppermost portion of the thyroid cartilage is seen to the right of the image. The hyoid bone with its prominent posterior acoustic shadow is seen in cross section in the middle of the image. The mylohyoid muscle (with an adjacent small lymph node) appears as a rectangular region of hypoechogenicity at the upper left side of the image. T = thyroid cartilage, H = shadow from hyoid bone.
