1 Writing a Hook/Intro

2 Hook=bait The hook GRABS the reader’s attention and gets them interested in what you’re about to talk about Think about the beginning of your intro paragraph as what brings the reader in If you were reading a paper, what would catch your attention? Hooks we’ve learned how to write: Use a question Use a quote Use a story

3 These are all good… But sometimes they don’t have the effect we want them to have because they’re not CONNECTED to the rest of our paper Three MUST HAVES in an intro: Hook Transition Thesis/claim

4 5 ways to write a hook 1. Inverted pyramid 2. Startling fact/statistic
3. Anecdote/personal experience 4. Rhetorical statement 5. Bold statement

5 Hook What was one example of a hook we found in the video?
Hook is always something interesting, something that makes the reader THINK and GRABS the reader’s attention Is bullying a significant issue facing high schoolers? My example: Did you know that in 2010, over 160,000 children missed school each day because of the fear of bullying? Write your example on your sheet

6 Transition Transition might be the most important part of the intro paragraph Transition CONNECTS your hook to your claim It gives further explanation of your hook, and makes sure the reader knows how it relates to your claim Is bullying a significant issue facing high schoolers? Hook: Did you know that in 2010, over 160,000 children missed school each day because of the fear of bullying? Transition: These kids are missing out on their education not because of their work ethic, but because someone else is literally making them fear for their lives. Claim: For this reason and others, schools must do something to cut down on bullying

7 Claim Your claim is your assertion of the truth of something ALWAYS
Debatable Identify my claim in the paragraph below and write it on your sheet Did you know that in 2010, over 160,000 children missed school each day because of the fear of bullying? These kids are missing out on their education not because of their work ethic, but because someone else is literally making them fear for their lives. For this reason and others, schools must do something to cut down on bullying

8 Now try your hand… Prompt: Should students be able to go off campus for lunch?

9 Writing Hooks Day 2

10 Review Three parts of an intro Hook Transition Claim
Start BROAD (big), get NARROW (small) like the upside down triangle

11 Example Have you ever felt used by someone who is just trying to get something they want? Have you ever felt like you give someone so much, but you never get anything in return? If you answered yes to either of these questions, then you probably know how NCAA student-athletes feel. These student-athletes spend countless hours practicing and competing to generate money for the university, yet they are left without money for a food or a car. College student-athletes work hard enough that they deserve to be paid. Identify the hook, transition, and claim

12 Let’s practice writing transitions
