10 So what was the point of this whole “revolution” thing?

11 Spread Enlightenment ideas.
Overthrew monarchs, set up republics. Promoted nationalism among oppressed minorities. Nationalism: The desire of one ethno-linguistic group (a nation) to have its own state that would use schools and other government institutions to promote that nation’s culture and language.

12 Other Accomplishments

Public Education for everyone Centralized education—Every student learned the same thing at the same time. 3. Concordat Legalized religion again.

Peninsular War— “A guerrilla war.” Spaniards fought with hit and run tactics + not wearing uniforms. The French retaliated against civilians. Pros and cons?

17 NEVER INVADE RUSSIA! WE WILL BURY YOU!
Attack on Russia NEVER INVADE RUSSIA! WE WILL BURY YOU! Tsar Alexander I of Russia

18 Why did Russia win? 1. Geography: The further East you go, the bigger it gets.

19 2. Scorched Earth Policy: No food or shelter left for the French army. Usually, Napoleon had good roads to move quickly. His troops “lived off the land.”

20 3. “General Winter”: 685,000 marched in; 31,000
marched out.

21 4. “Frosty” the War Penguin refused to breed in captivity.

22 The End … Austria, Russia, Great Britain, Prussia, Spain, Portugal all attacked France. Napoleon’s army mutinied. Banished to the island of Elba. Stuck on a tiny island, his dreams crushed. IT’S OVER! Right?

23 He’s back!!! Oh, wait. 1 year after being banished to Elba, Napoleon escaped, gathered troops and marched into Paris. Within 100 Days coalition forces destroyed Napoleon's army at the Battle of Waterloo. Napoleon was exiled to an even smaller island, St. Helena. Napoleon’s final resting place Battle of Waterloo

25 Discuss with a partner, then write on the board
Pick one, then one of you come on up to the board! It’s OK to guess. No repeats. Sign your name. What do you think Napoleon’s greatest accomplishment was + why? (left board). OR What do you think Napoleon’s greatest mistake and/or weakness was + write why you think that (right board). After the discussion, students are encouraged to ask online questions or write online comments about these questions. Keep it classy though…
