2 Ch. 39 – The Stalemated Seventies 1968 – 1980
The 1970’s - a dramatic decrease in the economy Why? Lack of skills gov’t regulations shift from manufacturing to service industry cost of Vietnam rising oil prices out of date factories LBJ’s deficit spending no tax increase Prices, cost of living and inflation increased Nixon’s expertise was in foreign affairs Vietnamization (Nixon Doctrine)– w/drawing US troops from Vietnam

3 Unfazed by protestors, Nixon claimed the ‘silent majority’ supported the war – led by Vice Pres. Spiro Agnew Vietnam was unpopular both at home and in the field B/c of college exceptions and civilians w/ certain skills exceptions, most soldiers were from lower income homes difficult fighting conditions, (My Lai Massacre) 1970, Nixon escalated the war to Cambodia touching off the Kent State shooting ‘hawks’ and ‘doves’, 26th amendment lowered voting age to 18 Pentagon Papers – showed gov’t deception in SE Asia National Security Advisor Henry Kissinger began peace talks w/ N.V. as well as China and S.U. Nixon (devoted anti-com.) visited China in 1972 to improve relation as well as play China and S.U. off each other Next he visited Sov. Un. increasing détente and agreeing to sell foodstuff to S.U.; ABM and SALT – nuclear arms limitation treaty – however, the arms race cont. Nixon also supported the ousting of a communist gov’t in Chile

In judicial matters, Nixon disapproved of the Warren Court’s liberalism Gideon v. Wainwright – all criminal defendants right to counsel Miranda warning – criminals must be aware of their rights Nixon appointed 4 new justices including conservative Warren Burger Yet under Burger, Roe v. Wade legalized abortion
