2 Deep Dive Groups CPSC 481 Week 1 Tutorial
Hand out: Working as a team tips from Randy Pausch - Bring: Your laptop, and adaptor to show video A few big sheets of flip chart paper (ask Tony or main office for these) (around 5-8) Big markers (around 5-8) Tape Lots of sticky-notes (ask Tony or main office for these) Finish with: (1) Team composition Anthony Tang, with acknowledgements to Julie Kientz, Saul Greenberg, Ehud Sharlin, Jake Wobbrock, Dave Hendry, Andy Ko, Jennifer Turns, & Mark Zachry

3 Good design RARELY happens alone
Others are needed to help generate ideas, give feedback, etc. Diversity of backgrounds, skills, and experiences are needed Today’s lab is about understanding that group process and facilitating team formation

4 IDEOs Deep Dive: Shopping Cart
Excellent example of the user-centered design process IDEO’s Deep Dive Video Part 1 - Part 2 - Part 3 - Videos are in the drop box. Use VLC to play them

5 Deep Dive Discussion – 15 mins
Lead the discussion. Here are some topics that are probably interesting to cover: What are some things about the environment worth taking note of? How does IDEO address design problem? Why do they believe that their process works? What is unusual from how you might expect design to work? How might you apply this process to the design of software? What things might not work in designing software? What is the process that the deep dive team engages in? What are some things about the process that are interesting? What is the role of the deep dive team? What is the role of the facilitator? Why do they not have a more traditional leader? What are the different ways that the people communicate their ideas?

6 Breakout Session – 35 mins total
Break into teams of three. These are not fixed. Imagine you are working at IDEO, and need to design X—just as you saw them design the shopping cart. You will start thinking about this process in this session. Handouts: syllabus, group formation

7 Breakout Session Team 1: Commuter bicycle Team 2: Sanitation dispensers Team 3: Personal health management Team 4: Hiker’s water filter Team 5: Self-checkout at grocery store

8 Breakout Session – 10 mins
What is the problem (or problems) that needs to be addressed? Where would this be used? By whom? What is the current situation? What are your assumptions about this problem? What would you need to find out? Who would you ask? How would you ask?

9 Breakout Session – 5 min talks
5 minute talks – walk everyone through the charts you constructed 2 minute questions

10 Group Formation – 10-15 mins
Your TA will place cards around the room that reflect the different project ideas Walk around, and discuss these project ideas with others Use sticky notes to add a variation to that project idea e.g. variations for communication system for families: (1) between homes; (2) between grandma and baby; (3) within a home Settle into groups of 3

11 Project Ideas System for people new to the city Personal fitness tracker: able bodied or physiotherapy Cross-family communication system Communication system for video gamers Paying the bill with a group Ordering system at a restaurant/bar Electronic course registration system Trip planning for public transit Buying movie tickets online (seat selection, etc.) System for navigating course material and communicating with other students
