2. Biography James Baldwin was born in Harlem in 1924
He became a preacher in his teens and spent three years preaching
After he left preaching he moved around Europe and New York often while pursuing his craft
He first moved to Paris and then came back to New York during the Civil Rights era

3. “The rockpile” A boy named Roy from Harlem
He spends most of his time outside with his brother looking at neighborhood boys playing on a rockpile across the street
He sneaks out and gets injured in a fight on the rockpile
After the family are scared for the father to come home and are apprehensive about what his reaction may be

4. “The man child” A boy named Eric who is eight and lives on a farm
His father and his Father’s best friend Jamie are both drunkards
Jamie once had everything Eric’s father did but he lost it
One day Jamie lures Eric to the barn and strangles him to death

5. “going to meet the man” The title story of the collection
About a man named Jesse, who is currently a deputy sheriff
Jesse recalls a time when he was younger and his family went to witness a man being castrated and beaten to death
He has an almost contradictory attitude towards the black people he interacts with daily
