1 Earth’s place Lesson One
Date: 9/13/17 Agenda LT: SEM system LT: I can use a model to describe the motion of the SEM system. Sponge: When you hear the word system, what do you think of?

2 TO do… Make up quizzes Intro to Space Unit:

3 What is a system? Sometimes, when scientists are trying to think about something, they focus on a system and only the components within it.

4 Systems and models Scientists often use models to represent systems. Why are models useful?

5 Copy the following in your index.
Rotation: to turn or spin around itself Revolution: to move around a different object, also called orbit

6 SEM Model- NB 106 Remember…you can use words and drawings!
Share ideas with your group!

7 SEM Model – NB 107 Each group needs one sun, one earth, and one moon. The other person will check to see if everyone is moving correctly. Moon: rotates counterclockwise while revolving counterclockwise around Earth. Earth: rotates counterclockwise and revolves counterclockwise around the Sun.

8 Roles Everyone contributes their thoughts! Model the movement of the Earth and sun. The moon sits this one out. Team Manager – Keep everyone in line! Materials Manager – Moon Data Manager – Earth Info Manager – Sun

9 Earth Moon Revolve Rotates

10 Earth Moon Revolve Earth revolves around the sun in an oval path once every year Rotates

11 Earth Moon Revolve Earth revolves around the sun in an oval path once every year Rotates Earth rotates around itself once every day

12 Roles Everyone contributes their thoughts! Model the movement of the Earth, moon, and sun. Team Manager – Keep everyone in line! Materials Manager – Moon Data Manager – Earth Info Manager – Sun

13 Earth Moon Revolve Earth revolves around the sun in an oval path once every year Moon revolves around the Earth in a circular path every 28days (about a month) Rotate Earth rotates around itself once every day

14 Earth Moon Revolves Earth revolves around the sun in an oval path once every year Moon revolves around the Earth in a circular path every… Rotates Earth rotates around itself once every day Moon rotates around itself once every 28 days (about a month)

15 Discuss… How do we make up the ¼ day in Earth’s revolution around the sun? Talk about it at your table for one minute – info managers, be prepared to share!

16 Below your chart… We have a leap year (an extra day in February) every 4 years to make up for the extra ¼ day in Earth’s revolution!

21 Earth’s place Lesson One
Date: 9/14/17 Agenda LT: Model SEM system LT: I can use a model to describe the motion of the SEM system. Sponge: Earth’s day is determined by ________. Earth’s year is determined by __________. Choose rotating or revolving.

22 TO do… Brainpop: Leap Year

23 Think, Pair, Share, Add to your notes!
Why do the moon and sun appear the same size in the sky?

24 THUMB example

25 Think, Pair, Share, copy on the top of NB 112!
The sun and the moon look the same size because the moon is smaller but it is also closer.

26 CARE: 9/18/17 What did you do this weekend? You may pass if you’d rather not participate. We will all be active listeners to those speaking. 30 seconds or less to share! 

27 Seat changes! Hold your belongings in your hands while I tell you where to sit. One table seated at a time! Please keeps comments and noises to yourself.

28 Earth’s place Lesson One
Date: 9/18/17 Agenda LT: Model SEM system LT: I can use a model to describe the motion of the SEM system. Sponge: Describe the difference between rotation and revolution.
