Have you ever seen an adult throw
a baby or young child into the air and catch them? Have you ever seen an adult jump on a bed with a baby or young child?

Do you think they are similar
to a baby or young child being thrown up against a wall?

SBS Well, they are. They can all cause shaken baby syndrome.

What is “Shaken Baby Syndrome”
Shaken baby syndrome is a type of inflicted traumatic brain injury that happens when a baby is violently shaken.

Why are babies susceptible?
A baby has weak neck muscles and a large, heavy head. Shaking makes the fragile brain bounce back and forth inside the skull and causes bruising, swelling, and bleeding.

Results permanent, severe brain damage or death bleeding in the brain
bleeding in the retina damage to the spinal cord and neck fractures of the ribs and bones

Symptoms extreme irritability lethargy poor feeding breathing problems
convulsions vomiting pale or bluish skin

Treatment life-sustaining measures respiratory support
surgery to stop internal bleeding and bleeding in the brain.

Prognosis Blindness Some form of neurological or mental disability
cerebral palsy mental retardation Children with shaken baby syndrome may require lifelong medical care.

Prevention NEVER shake a baby or child, whether in play or in anger.
Do not hold your baby during an argument. If you find yourself becoming annoyed or angry with your baby, put him in the crib and leave the room. Try to calm down.

Prevention Continued Call a local crisis hotline or child abuse hotline. Seek the help of a counselor and attend parenting classes. Call a friend or relative to come and stay with the child if you feel out of control.

Shaken baby syndrome is preventable.
Every child deserves a safe and happy home.
