2 Characterization How a reader/writer defines a character
There are five methods readers and writers use in order to define a character

3 #1- Physical Traits 1. how a character looks

4 #2- Thoughts 2. what a character thinks

5 #3- Speech 3. what a character says that is important

6 #4 Actions 4. what a character does

7 #5- What others think 5. what other characters in the story think about the character

8 Activity #1 Read children’s book discuss the five methods together.

9 Activity#2 You are a policemen. There has been a bank robbery. You are sent to interview an eyewitness. Complete the police report by asking the following questions/statements to the eyewitness.

10 Policeman’s question #1- Action
1. What did the bank robber do once he entered the bank?

11 Policeman’s question #2- Speech
2. What did the bank robber say?

12 Policeman’s statement #3-Thoughts
3. Explain in your own words what you think the bank robber was thinking.

13 Policeman’s statement #4- Other characters thoughts
4.Explain in your own words how you felt about the bank robber.

14 Policeman’s statement #5- Physical Traits
5. Give a physical description of the bank robber. List what the lips, nose, eyes, eyebrows, ears, chin, cheeks, hair, neck, eyelashes, forehead, mouth, skin color, and teeth looked like to the best of your ability.

6. Sketch the bank robber to the best of your ability.

16 Types of Characters Round Character- the reader sees several sides to the character’s personality

17 Types of Characters Flat Character- The reader sees only one or maybe two sides to the character’s personality

18 Types of Characters Stock Character- generic, “off the shelf” character, very minor, not important

19 Types of Characters Static Character- Characters has lots of action in the story but the character’s personality DOES NOT CHANGE

20 Types of Characters Dynamic Character- Characters has lots of action and the character’s personality DOES CHANGE
