Independent Activity
Respond to the following prompt: In chapter 1, Luma realizes that she had changed and could never feel comfortable living in Jordan again. Citing evidence from the text, explain why Luma would not feel comfortable living in Jordan after she had lived in America.
Read Chapter 2 Beatrice & Her Boys
Listen as I read the introduction and chapter 1 of the text.
As I read, think about how Warren St. John used characterization to inform us about the type of person Luma is.

As you read, think about how Mr. St. John uses characterization to describe Beatrice. How do her interactions shape her character? How does her behavior shape her character?

Luma is a very courageous and confident person that is not afraid to step out on faith for her dreams. Luma was willing to stay in an unknown land, America, without her father’s blessing so that she could live the life that she wanted to live. When her friends did not believe it was safe for a Muslim woman to live in Atlanta alone, Luma was unafraid and moved there without a job, family, and friends.
