Diesel Technology Program Review Presentation April 29th, 2015

2 Program Description Diesel/Clean Diesel Technology Student Training
Cutting Edge Mather Facility Our Diesel / Clean Diesel Technology program is a combination of classroom and hands-on shop experiences that prepare students for a career in the diesel industry. Students are trained in the use of workshop manuals in traditional and computerized formats, hand held meters, scanners and special shop tools including power and hand tools. Cutting edge technology by using what the industry is using. We are located at the Mather Facility location.

4 Program -- Strengths Faculty Program responsive to change
Meeting community needs Continuous upgrading of technology Articulation Build career pathways Student capacity New classes & certificates Grants Class times = Diversity Network in Industry One of the strengths is the faculty. They are constantly moving forward with the changes in the technology and look forward to sharing all the new technology with the students. Our program / department is small and can easily adjust to the rapid changes that take place. We are able to meet the needs of the community, by providing the diesel technology education to students who would work in the department as well as those wanting to upgrade their skills/knowledge with the new technology being implemented. Another strength is the ability to continually grow and change the shop. We constantly know that new technology is coming out, and we look for ways to update the shop with that technology in some way so that students are constantly learning and developing their skills to keep up to date with the industry. We are building and connecting to secondary diesel programs through articulation. Able to develop career pathways for students by sending out the bio books we’ve created via online and in the mail to over 500 potential industry employers. We are over our student capacity within our facility limitations. We have 1 degree and 5 certificates with more on the way. We have developed grants for green and clean diesel transportation programs. We are developing our diversity by allowing more access to our programs by offering more classes at non-traditional times. Another strength is the relationships we have built within the industry who are willing to work with us and assist us in making sure we are teaching and developing pathways for our students to be a future asset for their shops.

5 Program -- Challenges Space Qualified Instructors
More Adjuncts to cover classes Technologically current instructors Funds for updating technology Gender and ethnicity Develop classes One of the challenges is the space. We are currently running out of space in both lab and classroom. Storage space is also another issue. Finding qualified individuals for instructors to fill positions within our department. Another challenge is the need for more adjunct and full time instructors. We are running out of instructor time to implement all of our classes so students can fulfill their certificate/degree. Another challenge is the money for equipment needed to continue to build the program and expand it for continued hands on training. This also includes software and the usage of a Wi-Fi system that doesn’t continually cut out. Increase gender and ethnicity access to our program. Developing more interdisciplinary classes for clean and green technologies in the diesel industry.

6 Planning Implications
Articulation agreements with secondary schools: Sava, Lincoln High School Casa Roble San Joaquin New Energy Academy Hiring of full time instructor Hiring of adjunct instructors Creation of two new certificates & new classes in Hybrid
