2. WHAT IS ETHERNET OAM
A set of tools for Operations, Administration and Management (OAM)
for Ethernet networks.
2 standards available for Connectivity Fault management (CFM):
802.1ag - IEEE standard:
Loopback message (L2 ping)
Trace message (L2 traceroute)
CCM (Continuity Check Message)
Y ITU standard:
Includes same functionality as 802.1ag, but with extra features:
DMM – Delay and Jitter measurements
LMM – Frame loss measurements
And more..
For our purpose : Allows monitoring of L2 Ethernet connections (without IP connectivity)

3. BACKGROUND SURFsara has developed:
A plugin for monitoring the CCM status of remote Maintenance End Points (MEP) in Icinga.
A graphing template for Cacti to graph L2 Delay and jitter measurements.
The tools were developed and tested on a shared OAM testbed, together with TNO.
We wanted to demonstrate that it is possible to implement simple OAM monitoring without spending too much resources.
We wanted to have this available in our existing OSS environment, so that we did not have to invest in additional software.
No additional software required for L2 monitoring, this saves time and resources when implementing Ethernet OAM.

4. ETHERNET OAM SUPPORT IN ICINGA
The Icinga plugin monitors the CCM state of a Remote MEP and reports changes in the CCM status.
It shows Management Domain Levels and Management Association strings of detected remote MEPs.
It reports an alarm when a CCM alarm flag is triggered, or if there are issues with Interface state or Port state TLV’s.
Checks can be filtered for specific MEPs

5. ETHERNET OAM SUPPORT IN CACTI
Custom template for graphing DMM results: L2 delay and jitter.
Based on an XML data template for Cacti.
Currently only tested for Ciena (Which supports some parts of Y.1731)
Use the Cacti realtime plugin for realtime graph updates!

6. NOTES AND ISSUES Vendor support is growing, but not complete:
Juniper provides dot1ag support on MX an EX platform, but only on CLI, no SNMP! (Planned in Roadmap for 2014)

We sometimes encounter issues in the OAM implementation of devices.
