6. Seamounts vs. Guyots (volcanoes)

Guyot – seamounts that have been above sea level at some point, but sank due to plate movement
Waves/erosion have destroyed the top resulting in a flattened shape
We know they were at the surface because of fossil evidence (corals fossils)

7. Seamount Volcanoes occur in the ocean too. If they
build high enough above the ocean floor,
they may form islands. The islands may
weigh so much they eventually sink into
the Earth’s crust. Or they may never
break the surface of the water. Either
way, they may become seamounts—
mountains under the ocean. Use your
clay to make a volcano-shaped model
mountain that is a max of 10 cm high and not wide
enough at the base to touch the sides of
the plastic container.
