1 What is a Map? A way of representing any real world location or object on a two-dimensional surface (a paper, computer screen, etc.).

2 *A map that shows a cross section of a land surface
Profile Map *A map that shows a cross section of a land surface

3 Topographic Map *A 2-D map that uses contour lines to show 3-D landforms (shows elevation changes).

4 *An underwater topographic map
Bathymetric Map *An underwater topographic map (also called a chart)

5 *Contour lines that are close together indicate a steeper incline
Contour Map *Contour lines that are close together indicate a steeper incline *Contour lines that are further apart indicate an area that is less steep

6 Seamounts vs. Guyots (volcanoes)
Seamount – volcanoes that did not reach sea level (look like an underwater volcano) Guyot – seamounts that have been above sea level at some point, but sank due to plate movement Waves/erosion have destroyed the top resulting in a flattened shape We know they were at the surface because of fossil evidence (corals fossils)

7 Seamount Volcanoes occur in the ocean too. If they
build high enough above the ocean floor, they may form islands. The islands may weigh so much they eventually sink into the Earth’s crust. Or they may never break the surface of the water. Either way, they may become seamounts— mountains under the ocean. Use your clay to make a volcano-shaped model mountain that is a max of 10 cm high and not wide enough at the base to touch the sides of the plastic container.

8 Ruler Create a waterproof ruler by marking every cm from 12cm (1cm up from the bottom) to 1cm (top)

9 Conclusion Questions (Answer in Notebooks)
What view of the ocean is given in a profile map? What view of the ocean is given in a contour map? Is a navigational chart more like a profile map or a contour map? Why? On a contour map, how would you recognize the steep sides of a feature? How are bathymetric maps different from topographic map?

11 Geographic Information Systems
GIS Maps Geographic Information Systems

12 What is it? GIS lets us visualize, question, analyze, interpret, and understand data to reveal relationships, patterns, and trends. Helps us make better decisions using geography

13 Things in our Community
Red - Publix Orange - Restaurants Yellow – houses Green – Parks Blue – water Brown – strip clubs

14 What Can You Do With It? Map where things are Map quantities
A children's clothing company might want to find ZIP codes with many young families with relatively high income Map densities/distribution Find what’s nearby Find what’s changed Helps to anticipate future conditions and decide on a course of action (map paths of hurricanes to see where they might occur in the future)
