1 IECEE Hazardous Substances Testing Service (HSTS)

2 Legislation for Hazardous Substances
Many countries have legislation restricting the use of certain hazardous substances (HS) in electrical and electronic products Concern over the presence of hazardous substances in electric and electronic products has led many countries to pass legislation restricting their use. Throughout the world, manufacturers and suppliers of such products and components must ensure their products comply with an increasing number of national and regional regulations. They need to do this to be able to market products, avoid potential recalls or legal suits. The IECEE Hazardous Substances Testing Service was developed with this in mind.

3 In Europe since 2006: RoHS Directive (Restriction of Hazardous Substances), complementary to the WEEE Directive (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment)

4 Around the world Requirements similar to the European RoHS Directive exist so far in: Australia, China, Japan, Korea and US Manufacturers must comply with such national/regional regulations.

5 Hazardous substances Lead (Pb) Mercury (Hg) Cadium (Cd)
Hexavalent Chromium (Cr(VI) Polybromobiphenyl (PBB) Polybromobiphenyl ethers (PBDE)

6 Conformity assessment
Manufacturers must demonstrate that the percentage of hazardous substances in their products comply with the relevant regulations Qualified IECEE Member National Certification Bodies (NCB) and their associated labs issue Statements of Test Results (STR) and an associated Test Report according to applicable IEC International Standards for HS

7 Why use IECEE HSTS? Reliable tools to demonstrate compliance with HS content in electrical products Testing laboratories accepted by IECEE Testing according to International Standards, such as IEC 62321 The IECEE operated Hazardous Substances Testing Service gives manufacturers a simple way of showing compliance with relevant national regulations in different countries using a third party testing system. The testing according to the International Standard identifies whether and to what extent the product contains the restricted substances, which usually are the 6 above-mentioned substances. The laboratories are accepted by IECEE as qualified to do the testing and are themselves assessed initially and periodically to be sure they can carry out the work correctly. A Statement of Test Results (STR) issued by internationally recognized IECEE Member National Certification Body (NCB) STRs are widely recognized by authorities worldwide and by other NCBs within IECEE CB Scheme

8 Key benefits Internationally recognized attestation
IECEE Statement of Test Results Independent testing of compliance with relevant IEC International Standards Saving of cost and time to market by avoiding repeat testing in different countries/regions
