2. The First New Deal
National Industrial Recovery Act (NIRA) targeted the needs of business, labor unions, and the unemployed
Public Works Administration oversaw construction projects that would create jobs.
Agricultural Adjustment Administration (AAA) - helped farmers by paying them to plant fewer crops so that prices would rise.
The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) - a work-relief program that gave young men jobs through conservation projects.

3. Protest and Political Challenges
The American Liberty League was a group of critics who believed that the New Deal had gone too far in expanding the role of the federal government.
Other critics, like Robert La Follette, Dr. Francis Townsend, and Huey Long, believed that the government should do more to help the needy. Long wanted to take money from the rich and give every American family a grant, a job, and an income.

4. The Second New Deal
Works Progress Administration, a work-relief organization that put more than 3 million Americans to work on various projects in its first year.
The Wagner Act created the National Labor Relations Board to protect workers’ rights.
The Social Security Act created several programs to help Americans, including retirement, disability, and unemployment benefits.

5. Social and Political Impacts
The New Deal (ND) strengthening the labor movement
The Congress of Industrial Organizations was established to accept all types of workers
Some women held high gov’t positions, but many lost their jobs b/c employing men was more valued
For African Americans, many ND agencies still practiced racial segregation.
Some Mexican Americans benefited from ND work-relief programs, but more than a third returned to Mexico.
Diverse groups together supported FDR and the ND in the 1936 election, a political partnership called the New Deal Coalition.
