Vocabulary p. 76 Read the vocabulary on p. 76/77 Listen and repeat Which words are unfamiliar?

4 Refutation Refutation – shows alternate views are wrong, false, or less right than the writer's view. Good argumentative essays use refutation to show awareness of other viewpoints.

5 Rebuttal Argument An Essay that, rather than supporting one viewpoint in a positive way, instead focuses on rebutting or disproving the other view point(s).

6 Refutation Methods Find a weakness or problem with other viewpoints
Cast doubt Question accuracy and relevance Demonstrate that the facts, evidence, reasons, statistics are insufficient

7 Structure of Refutation
Point out (briefly) other view points Strongly demonstrate how they are not as good as the point supported

8 It must go AFTER the claim
Where does it go? It must go AFTER the claim For a supporting essay, it should go before the conclusion For a rebuttal essay, it can go anywhere

9 Public Good VS Evil When refuting, it is important to discuss the negative sides of the other claims Never make it a personal attack Your essay is not a personal essay This essay should show how your view point supports the public good Refutation shows how the other view points do NOT support the public good

10 P. 78 5 minutes Write opposing viewpoints.
This does not have to be your personal opinion, but rather an alternative opinion to the one stated. Compare what you wrote with a partner

11 p. 79 Exact Words Word choice can change how your reader feels about your writing Word choice can be difficult as EFL students Be careful about which words you are choosing

12 Read page 79-80 Be careful of using Chinese equivalents
This is where translators usually hurt your writing. Check for context of the word choice Does it match the context of the sentence?

13 Synonyms – words with similar or the same meaning as another word
Sometimes the definition of a word is the same as another word, but the connotation is different.

14 Definition Vs Connotation
A definition is the word's meaning, how it is explained in a dictionary A connotation is the feeling a word implies. Think about the definition AND connotation for the word before using it

15 Chinglish -Chinese English Phrases and Words
Many times using a translator/dictionary causes connotation problems There are phrases used in China that are only used in China. These phrases are not English; they should not be used in your writing For example: “Take a rest” That is not something said in English by native speakers. It is something said by non-native speakers in Asia.

16 Practice Word Choice Look at the first exercise on p. 81
Change out the underlined word or phrase for another word or phrase with the same meaning Write the new word/phrase in your book above the line

17 Practice Word Choice Look at the second exercise on p. 81/82
These show direct translations from Chinese, but they do not work in English. Rephrase the underlined sections to be more clear. Many people will have different answers
