5 The Harlem Renaissance
Many African Americans joined the Great Migration from the South to the Northern cities. As the North’s African American population grew, it began to start a revolution within culture and arts. New York City’s Harlem neighborhood became the center of the flower African American arts. The Harlem Renaissance

6 Two of its well known writers were Claude McKay and Langston Hughes.
McKay published Harlem Shadows in His writings expressed defiance and contempt of racism. Hughes became the leading voice of the African American experience. The Writers

A young man by the name of Louis Armstrong moved to Chicago in He introduced an early improvisational style of jazz music. His music was influenced by Dixieland blues & ragtime. Bandleader Duke Ellington got his start at the Harlem Cotton Club. Jazz, Blues, & Theater

Many African Americans voted for Republicans. This was because, traditionally, Republicans were part of the party of Lincoln. In 1928, Oscar Depriest became the first African American congressman from a northern state. (Chicago, Ill.) Depriest introduced laws against racial discrimination and lynching. 13 The NAACP Battles Injustice
The main tactic of the NAACP was lobbying politicians, however it also worked through the courts. It helped get an anti-lynching bill passed in the House of Representatives in 1922. In 1930, the NAACP helped defeat a Supreme Court nominee known for his racist positions. This proved that the NAACP had the strength to affect national politics. The NAACP Battles Injustice

15 Black Nationalism and Marcus Garvey
Other groups stressed Black Pride and “Negro Nationalism.” “Negro Nationalism” glorified black culture and tradition. Marcus Garvey was a dynamic leader from Jamaica. He founded a group called the Universal Negro Improvement Association. He believed African Americans could gain economic and political power through education. 16 The growing African American middle class distanced itself from the movement.
The FBI saw UNIA as a dangerous catalyst for black uprisings in urban areas. Garvey was convicted of mail fraud in 1923, and in President Coolidge had him deported. In the end, his movement inspired many people to have pride in their African heritage.
