1 Keeping hot water hot challenge.
Lesson Aims: Who will have the hottest water at the end of the lesson? Available to use: Silver foil £6 Paper towel lid £1 Plastic lids £4 Bubble wrap / cotton wool £4 Thin Wrap £1 Cardboard (to stand beaker on) £2 Polystyrene (to stand beaker on) £4 Prize for the best cheapest insulation solution.

2 Experiment 100ml Beaker and your choice of insulation.
Lesson Aims: 100ml Beaker and your choice of insulation. 50ml water at 60oC ( measure water out with temperature above 60oC and start the stopclock when the water temperature reaches 60oC) Measure the temperature of the water every minute – record your results in a suitable table. Take your final reading at 15 minutes. Draw a graph of your results. On separate sheet.

3 By the end of the lesson…
Lesson Aims: You need to have : Drawn a diagram of your choice of insulation & explained what type of heat loss each is preventing. collected readings for the temperature of your water for 15 minutes. Presented this information on a suitable graph (think about the independent and dependent variables) Written a conclusion. Written an evaluation explaining how you would improve your experiment in the future. On separate sheet.

4 Warning! Lesson Aims: There is HOT water. Do not sit down and take results unless you want a groin covered in scalding hot water! All bags away – trip hazard!

5 Conclusion Lesson Aims: Conclusion: At the end of 15 minutes what is the temperature of your water? How did each insulation type work? Words to use: Conduction, convection, radiation, trapped air, insulation, shiny surface, Evaluation: What would you change if you were to try again?

6 Extension Lesson Aims: Design an experiment to test each type of insulation individually so you could suggest the best combination of insulations for keeping Mrs Kimberley’s cup of coffee warm when she’s on yard duty. How would you make it a fair test?

7 Homework Lesson Aims: Have a lovely Easter holiday.
