2 September 5th (1958) Dr. Zhivago, a novel by Russian author Boris Pasternak, debuts in the United States. The book wins the Nobel Prize and is banned in the Soviet Union. Why is freedom of the press such an important freedom to Americans? Explain.

3 September 6th (1492) Christopher Columbus sails west for the Canary Islands during his first voyage to North America Should Americans remember Christopher Columbus as a hero for bravely sailing into the new world, or as a villain for his treatment of Native Americans? Explain your answer.

4 September 7th (1695) The English government bans Irish Catholics from teaching, sending children to other countries for schooling, having guns, or owning horses. What impact do you think laws like these had on our founding fathers? Explain.

5 September 8th (1504) Italian sculptor Michelangelo’s David is unveiled in the Florence town square. Many people have criticized David by calling it obscene because of the sculptures nudity. Do you think it is obscene? What makes a piece of art “obscene?”
