1 Practicing Joy February 19

2 Think about it … Even if you had a difficult week, tell of one ordinary pleasure you experienced. Everyone has both good and difficult times in a given week. When I focus on Christ, joy and peace flood my life Today we look at Paul’s challenge to practice a life of joy

3 Listen for a repeated command.
Philippians 4:4-5 (NIV) Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! 5 Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near.

4 Rejoice and Be Gracious
Paul was writing from a jail cell. What kinds of things could he have communicated? Instead of this, what are Paul’s comments and exhortations. Why do you think Paul repeats the command to “rejoice?” What is your initial reaction to the command to rejoice?

5 Rejoice and Be Gracious
How can we rejoice even when things aren’t going well? What evidence might others see in a person’s life that he or she is living in the joy of the Lord? Sports enthusiasts commonly rejoice over their teams’ successes. As believers, why do we have much more to celebrate?

6 Listen for the superlatives in these verses … words that are all inclusive.
Philippians 4:6-7 (NIV) Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

7 Replace Anxiety with Peace
How are the superlatives used? What are some kinds of things people worry about? Why does worrying (being anxious) not help? Paul says to pray instead of worrying. How does talking to God work better than worrying?

8 Replace Anxiety with Peace
What does Paul say will be the results when we do praise God and bring your needs to Him, despite the problems? Why is it important when you petition God to do so with thanksgiving? Why is the peace that God gives beyond understanding?

9 Listen for what should fill our minds.
Philippians 4:8-9 (NIV) Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable--if anything is excellent or praiseworthy--think about such things. 9 Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me--put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you.

10 Live Out What You Know What are the qualities of wholesome thoughts? What are their opposites? How can we practice the things Paul taught in the passage? How do you keep your focus on godly thinking that leads to godly living?

11 Live Out What You Know How does thinking on these things affect the way we act. In addition to these qualities Paul taught about, he also modeled them before those around him. Who in our lives needs to see us model these qualities?

12 Application Pray. Is your tendency to try to fix your problems before praying about them? Pray about these burdens first. As you pray, ask the Lord to grant you His peace and graciousness as you deal with them.

13 Application Commit to memory Philippians 4:6-7.
Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Get a proper perspective on the challenges of life Give your burdens to God and saturate your mind with this passage.

14 Application Think of what is filling your mind.
Is there something you need to stop viewing? Is there some way you can replace dark thoughts with noble thoughts? Consider some changes you can make, and perhaps seek some accountability from a trusted friend.
