1 Central Processing Unit (CPU)
By Intan and Nasuha

2 What is CPU?? The CPU of a computer is a piece of hardware that carries out the instructions of a computer program. Sometimes also referred to as the central processor unit, or processors Performs the basic arithmetical, logical, and input/output operations of a computer system. CPU, likes the “brain” of the computer-every simple instruction, has to go through the CPU. Located on the motherboard Needs its own cooling system(fan)

3 Cooling system(Fan) CPU Socket CPU Processor

4 Components of CPU The Arithmetic Logic Unit (ALU) : Responsible for performing arithmetic (+,-,*,/) and logic(<,>,=) operations. Control Unit (CU) : Responsible for retrieving instructions from memory, determining their type and breaking each instruction into a simple of steps or actions. Memory : Stores programs and data while waiting to be processed by the CPU. Also called primary storage, internal storage or main memory.

5 Process of CPU  Fetch instruction : The CPU reads an instruction from the memory. Interpret instruction : The instruction is decoded to determine what action is required. Fetch data : The execution of an instruction may require reading data from memory or an input/output device. Process data : The execution of an instruction may require performing some arithmetic or logical operation on data. Write data : The result of an execution may require writing data to memory or an input/output module

6 Function Of CPU To carry out processing
To perform arithmetic calculation such as addition, subtraction, etc To read instruction and data from memory To give commands to all parts of the computer system To control the timing of information flow To control the storage of data or instruction

7 INTEL vs AMD Processors
User Requirement AMD Intel Price Cheaper than Intel Expensive Power Consumption Less efficient Efficient Cooling Factor Heats up faster Runs cooler for a longer duration Performance Speed Not very fast, compared to Intel Faster than AMD Gaming and Multimedia Good Performance : Price Good : Low Good : High
