Background Staying active is very important for reasons other than looking good. The wellbeing of the elderly population weighs heavily on how healthy and active they are during everyday life. Physical inactivity can increase risk of chronic disease and make existing illness worse.

Method A group of thirty subjects, sixty years and older, were given a survey. The results of the survey showed exactly how inactive the lifestyle of elderly people can be.

Description of Study Subjects performed a general fitness assessment which helped determine the functionality of a small group of elderly people. This assessment determined overall strength, endurance, and flexibility. These results will help create a program to improve health, activity levels, and lower BMI.

Instrumentation Subjects performed a general fitness assessment specifically for the elderly population. Subjects performed a routine of exercises, with the assistance of a personal trainer, to acquire their basic overall assessment results.

Physical Assessment This table is what the personal trainers filled out for each subject who participated.

Discussion The correlation between overall health and activity level shows that the average elderly person has an overall health rating of fair and a somewhat active lifestyle. This reflects the results of activity level and BMI. The fitness test that was given is a part of assessing exactly how capable the elderly individual is and will be when completing daily tasks.

Next Steps A program that involves strength training, endurance, balance, and flexibility should be implemented for subjects with a sedentary activity level. By personalizing programs for each subject, it would make it possible to track improvement. After six months, the fitness assessment will be given again and the results will then be compared to the current data. It is believed that this would help improve the quality of life of the elderly population. Daily function will be less painful and more doable.
