18 LITERACY FOCUS STRETCH QUESTIONS What is meant by a ‘balanced diet’?
The key to keeping healthy is to have a balanced diet. This means that each day you eat foods from all food groups and in the right amounts. There are seven major food groups. You need more of some food groups than others to maintain a balanced diet. PROTEIN is a very important nutrient. (It is so important that your body even needed it and used it before you were born). Proteins help us GROW and they REPAIR OUR CELLS. Your muscles and organs are mostly made up of protein! If you cut yourself, it is protein that comes to the rescue and helps you to heal! Protein can be found in meat, fish, nuts, eggs and milk. FATS are used to STORE ENERGY. They also KEEP US WARM. We have fat around our organs which protects them. Foods that have fat in them include: cheese, butter, chips and junk food. Although fat is needed for a healthy diet, too much is bad for you. CARBOHYDRATES STORE ENERGY. They provide all the cells in our body with the ENERGY they need. Foods containing carbohydrates include bread, pasta, cereal and sugary foods. MILK AND DAIRY – examples of these types of food are milk, cheese yoghurt. VITAMINS AND MINERALS are only needed in small amounts but are still essential in a balanced diet. Vitamin C (found in fruit and vegetables) is needed to STRENGHTEN BONES AND TEETH. Examples of minerals include iron and calcium. Iron (found in red meat and raisons) is needed for HEALTHY RED BLOOD CELLS. Calcium (found in dairy products) helps to build STRONG BONES. FIBRE keeps the LARGE INTESTINE WORKING PROPERLY AND PREVENTS CONTSIPATION. Wholegrain cereals and wholemeal bread are good sources of fibre. You can also find fibre in oats, fruit and vegetables. WATER is often forgotten about, but water is very, very important within your diet. Your body loses fluids through breathing, sweat and urine, causing you to be dehydrated. This makes you feel really thirsty and you need to drink lots of water to REPLACE LOST FLUIDS. Water is found in drinks and fruits. What is meant by a ‘balanced diet’? What are the 7 main food groups or nutrients? Name two different minerals? What do they do? Describe what the word deficiency means. Give an example of a deficiency disease and describe some of the symptoms.
