1 Adaptation of Activities

2 Adaptation Task: In groups using the 4 sections belong discuss how activities can be adapted. Activities can be adapted in many ways: Rules Equipment Duration of time Size and Layout of playing area

3 Adaptation Continued The intention in making any of the above changes to activities is that your skill development can benefit from the changes.

4 Examples Rules: Activity: Volleyball
Official rules of volleyball difficult for skill development. Certain rules can be adapted to improve skills. Normal rule – One touch per player, 3 touches before ball goes over net. An additional touch of the ball to help gain control, this may help for the player to turn around and face the direction to play the ball.

5 Examples Equipment: Activity: Badminton Activity: Basketball
Using a badminton racket with a smaller handle Activity: Basketball The back boards on the court are lowered to help make scoring easier. Using smaller and lighter basketballs Activity: Athletics – Javelin Using lighter equipment to make the skill easier to learn. Learning with a foam javelin, that is lighter to help establish the basic throwing action.

6 Examples Size of playing area: Activity: Rugby & Football
Area reduced to help players performance. This means you are likely to learn that running directly at opponents is often required in order to gain distance. Also can reduce the number of players on the area. This can help players to gain more touches to help develop skills.

7 Small Sided Games Sometimes the normal rules of an activity can be changed to make some important points clearer. This can be referred to as Conditioned Games.

Awarding higher points on skills working on in practise Small sided games (4v4, 6v6) Helping to improve skills More attackers than defenders (3v2) Allows more scoring options
