People The country's population is almost evenly distributed throughout its 64 districts. On average, a district has a population of about 1.8 million, a Thana 230,000, a union 25,000 and a village 2,000. There are 490 Thanas, 4,451 unions and 59,990 villages. The number of households is about 20 million. On average, a household consists of 5.6 persons The capital city of Dhaka has an estimated population of 8.58 million. The annual growth rate of the population has come down to 1.75%. Life expectancy at birth is 59.5 years. The rate of child mortality per 1000 has come down to 76.8%. Education has improved a great deal over recent years, over 40% of the population are literate and over 80% enrolled into school.

Religion and culture Bangladesh is one of the largest Muslim countries in the world. About 80 percent of Bangladeshis are Muslims. Most Bangladeshi Muslims are Sunnis, but there is a small Shia community. Hinduism constitutes about 12 percent of the population. There are significant numbers of Buddhists and Christians in Bangladesh. There approximately 600,000 Buddhists in Bangladesh, representing less than 1 percent of the population. Bangladesh also has a very small number of tribal community that obey a different type of religious beliefs.

6 Food A staple food across the country is rice and various kinds of lentil, which is locally known as daal. Fish features as the major source of protein in the Bangladeshi diet. There is also a saying which goes "Mach-e Batth-e Bangali" (Fish and rice make a Bengali) Another integral part of Bangladeshi cuisine is beef.

7 Currency The name of Bangladeshi currency is Taka.

There are two types like many other countries'- notes and coins. Notes: One taka, two taka, five taka, ten taka, twenty taka, fifty taka, one hundred taka and five hundred taka. Coins: One poisha, five poisha, ten poisha, twenty-five poisha, fifty poisha, one taka and five taka.
