Do Ratios Matter? 6.RP.1 Understand the concept of a ratio and use ratio language to describe a ratio relationship between two quantities. Mrs. Lofton’s 6th grade math

2 What is a ratio? A ratio is one thing compared to or related to another thing; it is just a statement or an expression. Example : The ratio is 3:1 or 3/1 Example: Suppose there are thirty-five people, fifteen of whom are men. Then the ratio of men to women is 15 to 20.

3 Reading a ratio The order of the numbers in a ratio should match the order of the words in a ratio. apples to oranges

4 Ratios can be written in several different ways. moon to stars 1:3 1/3

5 Ratio as comparison Ratios can show comparisons between: part to part
Red to green 1 to 2 Green to red 2 to 1

6 Part to whole Ratio can show a comparison between: part to whole Green to whole 2 to 3 2/3 Red to whole 1 to 3 1/3

7 Ratio can show a comparison between: Whole to part Whole to green 3: 2
Whole to red 3/1

11 Can you solve the problem?
In Mrs. Jones’ class are 20 students. There are 12 boys and 8 girls. 7 students have brown hair, 10 have blonde hair and 3 have red hair. What is the ratio of students with blond hair to those that have red hair? Martha has 10 shirts. 3 are red and the rest are white. How many red shirts to white shirts does she have?
