‘Lyric’ poetry Iambi: coarse, low-class content, sexual narratives.
Often in iambic meter. Apparently spoken. Possibly performed at public festivals in association with fertility rituals; also at symposia. Archilochus, Hipponax. Elegy: Intermediate style Elegiac couplets. Probably sung to the aulos (double-pipe) Short couplets of advice or erotic sentiments (Mimnermus, Theognidea) probably performed at symposium. Longer narrative elegies or poems of military exhortation performed at festivals or even on campaign (Tyrtaeus). Melic (melos, limb; song): lyric meters; elevated language Sung to accompaniment of the lyre. Traditional division betw monody (solo singer) and choral poetry (sung and danced by chorus).
