TORNADOES Champion Learner Challenge Kanay Mistry Oak Class December 2015

2 TORNADOES What are they? How do they form? How do you survive one?
Worst tornadoes recorded in history Tornado quiz I’m Kanay Mistry and I’m going to talk about Tornadoes.

3 WHAT ARE TORNADOES? Tornadoes are large thunderstorms that can grow over 40,000 feet with a column of warm humid air which rises very quickly. This devastating type of natural disaster can destroy lots of houses and buildings.

5 HOW A TORNADO FORMS Tornadoes start as thunderstorms, that have powerful winds, heavy rain and sometimes even lightning! The moist air from places like Mexico and dry places like Canada creates chaos in the atmosphere. When the wind changes direction and the wind changes its speed, this creates an horizontal spinning effect in the lower atmosphere. Rising air changes the horizontal spinning effect to a vertical spinning effect. Most strong and violent tornadoes form within this area of strong rotation. You need warm, moist air from the Gulf of Mexico and cool, dry air from Canada. When these two air masses meet, they create instability in the atmosphere. A change in wind direction and an increase in wind speed with increasing height creates an invisible, horizontal spinning effect in the lower atmosphere. Rising air within the updraft tilts the rotating air from horizontal to vertical. An area of rotation, 2-6 miles wide, now extends through much of the storm. Most strong and violent tornadoes form within this area of strong rotation.

7 HOW TO SURVIVE A TORNADO
Always run as fast as you can as the tornado could be right behind you! Always take a supply of food and water in case you get stranded when you’re running away from the tornado. Always look behind you because you might be running from nothing or you could be hit by a tornado right in front of you. Always be prepared because a tornado could strike any minute!

8 WORST TORNADOES RECORDED IN HISTORY
One of the worst tornadoes happened on May 31, 2013, in EI Reno, Oklahoma. This devastating tornado was surprisingly big - about 2.6miles wide!! The tornado was so powerful that it crushed a house in half. EL Reno tornado Destruction of EL Reno tornado On May 31, 2013, a tornado hit rural areas near El Reno, Oklahoma. The tornado was originally rated as an EF3 based on damage; however, after mobile radar data analysis was conducted, it was concluded to have an EF5 due to a measured wind speed of greater than 296 mph (476 kmh), second only to the Bridge Creek - Moore tornado. analysis found winds of 302 mph (486 km/h) well above ground level and 291 mph (468 km/h) below 10 m (33 ft) with some moving at 175 mph (282 km/h). These winds may possibly be as high or higher than the winds recorded on May 3, Despite the recorded wind speed, the El Reno tornado was later downgraded back to EF3 due to the fact that no EF5 damage was. When Mother Nature strikes, she shows no mercy regardless how high-tech new equipment can be. While disaster preparedness is taught to many, natural disasters like tornadoes can wreck havoc on whatever comes along their path and fatalities often occur. The United States alone experiences several tornadoes in a year. Just recently on the fateful day of May 20, 2013, the suburban town of Moore in Oklahoma had witnessed a massive twister and was the hardest hit among the rest of the Oklahoma City suburbs where the storm carved a trail. Thanks to new technology, the world has seen just how destructive a tornado can be. Disaster preparedness is a proven way to help save lives and minimize death. The tornado that hit El Reno, Oklahoma, was unusually large and is in fact is the widest tornado with a width of 2.6 miles, according to the Storm Prediction Centres found, likely due to the lack of sufficient damageindicators.
