Information rather than usual Parent Teacher Meeting. This meeting is to highlight with you, as parents and students, that GCSEs are an ongoing process with continual assessment.

Behaviour Academic Indiscipline Home – School Links

5 Head of Middle School Mrs C MC GRATH

6 4th Year Modules Your son will complete modules at the
end of 4th year worth (25 / 60% of full GCSE). Two fifths of the year group will complete GCSE Maths in one year - 100% assessment Summer 2018. 4th year module work is not revisited in class in 5th year. Poor results in modules mean he will have to complete extra exams in 5th year. There is a repeat exam fee of approx. £ 13 per module.

7 Controlled Assessment & Coursework.
Controlled Assessment is a formal, recognised part of your son’s GCSE course. He will sit between one and four of these per subject (see flyer). Exam conditions prevail in CA/Deadlines set; Construction, ICT, Music, Moving Images, Technology, Art. This work is on-going over the two years. This area plays a significant part in your son’s GCSE grade.

8 Benchmark / Targets: Year 12
98% at least 5 GCSEs ( 3/133 didn't get 5 GCSEs) 96% 7 GCSEs or more (6/133 less than 7) Fantastic results - Benchmark for current Year 11/12!

Year Tutor.. - Welcome Back. - Home-School Links / Support from parents - Communication through the Planner - Behaviour / Discipline - Academic Indiscipline - Focus for our Year Group

11 Home – School Links The planner is an important means of
communication between parents and teachers. Signing the planner recognises that you are aware of teachers’ concerns and it will give you an indication of the work your son is doing. The phrase ‘No homework’ – should never be recorded. Every student has work to do on a daily basis in each subject – i.e. revision of notes, extra reading, oral work etc.

12 Students at GCSE should complete
at least 1½ hours revision per night. A note is required to explain all absences. Reminder to communicate with the school where there are significant issues that affect your son.

13 Behaviour Pupils and parents are aware of our expectations in this area and your support is essential. We have Very High expectations of all students in Years 11 and 12. Behaviour has a crucial impact on 4th year for two reasons:

14 Poor behaviour affects your son’s
progress and also his classmates’ progress. Behaviour can also be a deciding factor in your son being invited back to the Abbey for A level study.

15 Academic Indiscipline
Non-compliance with homework, class assessments, coursework, preparation for Controlled Assessment are all examples of Academic Indiscipline. Expect the Abbey to respond with support and to challenge this behaviour. Academic Indiscipline is the single biggest reason for underachievement at GCSE. Monitoring and Reviews – (Sept/ October/ Dec/March/June)

19 In the Abbey we recognise that you as parents have entrusted us with the education of your son.
As a school we recognise that we have a responsibility to look after the whole person; educationally, physically and emotionally. Help us to achieve this by working with us, communicating when necessary and by taking an interest in what your son is doing in school. Encourage him as much as possible, as often as possible.

20 Our Year… …Our focus Growth You are becoming adults.
You are leaving Junior School behind. Accept that responsibility for what you achieve at GCSE belongs to you. Work with your teachers. Ask questions. Go the extra mile – all of the time. Have no regrets.

21 Engaging In School Life……

22 Focus for Year 11… New beginnings…
Connect…with the people around you. Be Active – mind and body. Take Notice – Be curious, be aware, notice, reflect. Keep Learning – try new things – this will build your confidence and ask questions, always. Give – do nice things for others, thank others, smile, volunteer.

23 Partnership Remember… Your education is a partnership between
you and the school. The Abbey has excellent teachers who will go the extra mile for you. They want to see you succeed. Work with them, ask questions, get to know them.

24 And finally….. “Success is no accident. It is hard work, perseverance, learning, studying, sacrifice and most of all, love of what you are doing or learning to do.” Pelé (Three time World Cup winner with Brazil)
