2 Tableaux What do these images mean to you? Work in groups of 3/4
Using them as a stimulus, create 4 tableaux to demonstrate what they make you think of, the character, theme, etc.

3 Thought Tracking Thought tracking is an exploratory technique which allows the audience to hear what a character is thinking. Go back into your tableaux. Add at least two thought tracks for each tableaux.

4 Tell Me Why? I don’t like Mondays
(When) The silicon chip inside her head Gets switched to overload And nobody’s gonna go to school today She’s gonna make them stay at home And daddy doesn’t understand it He always said she was good as gold And he can see no reasons 'Cos there are no reasons What reasons do you need to be shown? Oh Oh Oh Chorus to fade

5 At the age of 16, Brenda Spencer killed 2 adults, and injured 8 others.
One Monday morning in 1979, she sat at her bedroom window with a gun, and shot at the elementary school opposite. At the time, she was asked why she did it. She simply replied: “I just don’t like Mondays”. The song became huge all over the world, but was banned in America. Why?

6 Task – Role Play In your groups, develop the tableaux and thought tracking into a roleplay. The role play must show the Friday at school, the Sunday night before the shooting, and that Monday morning, right up until the moment where Brenda takes the gun and sits at the windowsill. You need to consider why she has done this? What might have happened to drive her to this? Think about appropriate drama skills.

7 Learning objectives To recap your learning from last week’s lesson
To develop your understanding of your character through the use of writing in role

9 Lesson 2 – Internal Monologue
Back in your groups, you need to remind yourself of which character you are. You are now going to write an internal monologue for your character. This is like a longer thought track. You worked on monologues last term. Think about how the monologue should be performed. Incorporate the internal monologue into your role play performance.

10 Lesson 3 – What happened later?
During Brenda’s parole hearing in 2001, she claimed that she had suffered years of abuse from her father. She said that she had asked for a radio for Christmas, but that her dad had bought her a gun. She said that every time there was a high school shooting in America, she wondered if the students got their idea from her. Add another scene onto your role play, which is the parole hearing in 2001. Is Brenda sorry? Unrepentant? Your scene must include parrot on the shoulder.
