Pastor Bryce Formwalt Joyful Harvest Church Johnsburg, IL

2 Putting it All Together
What role does SCORRE play in the context of an entire speech? Focus – it is the Heart of the speech What are the other elements of a speech? Opening Outline Structure Closing

3 Putting it All Together
Why can’t I give both an enabling and obligatory speech? Speeches must have a single objective When doing an enabling speech, it is appropriate to use an opening that helps persuade people to want to know the how of the speech. When doing a obligatory speech, it is appropriate to use the closing to present an opportunity for action or response.

4 Putting it All Together
Opening The opening is a fuse designed to ignite your audience. It is the only chance you’ll have to make your audience want to hear what you have to say. If the fuse is wet, you’ll fizzle. Purpose of the opening: Establish contact Stir interest in the subject Show a basis for giving the talk Develop rapport Make your audience want to listen Prepare the audience

5 Putting it All Together
Opening Two basic parts to an opening: Introduction – Grab ‘em Transition – Move ‘em Qualities of a good opening: Brief, clear, appropriate, purposeful, and audience-centered Characteristics of a poor opening: Full of flattery, apology-ridden, predictable, and complex

6 Putting it All Together
Closing Purpose of the closing: Restate the objective and remind the audience of the logic that led to it. Provide an opportunity for response or application. Qualities of a good closing: Brief, clear, unifying, well prepared, appropriate, and practical

7 Putting it All Together
Benefits of using an Outline Form: Keeps you on track Keeps you on time

8 Managing Your Time Take critical steps to manage your time:
Know the cost of saving time: Time Know the value of time: Power to your message Learn the principle of one ahead. Make a commitment to: Get away and get ahead Stay ahead Learn to prepare your messages in stages: Idea, Skeleton (SCORRE), Outline, Fermentation
