2 Standards This task meets multiple 6th and 7th grade Ratios and Proportions standards as well as multiple 6th and 7th Grade Number Systems standards, depending on what adaptions you use. CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.6.NS.A.1 Interpret and compute quotients of fractions, and solve word problems involving division of fractions by fractions, e.g., by using visual fraction models and equations to represent the problem. CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.6.RP.A.3 Use ratio and rate reasoning to solve real-world and mathematical problems, e.g., by reasoning about tables of equivalent ratios, tape diagrams, double number line diagrams, or equations. CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.7.NS.A.1 Apply and extend previous understandings of addition and subtraction to add and subtract rational numbers; represent addition and subtraction on a horizontal or vertical number line diagram. CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.7.NS.A.2 Apply and extend previous understandings of multiplication and division and of fractions to multiply and divide rational numbers. CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.7.RP.A.1 Compute unit rates associated with ratios of fractions, including ratios of lengths, areas and other quantities measured in like or different units. CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.7.RP.A.2 Recognize and represent proportional relationships between quantities.

3 Objectives SWBAT Use ratio and rate reasoning to find out how many lemon wedges you would need in the large cup of water to make them taste the same. SWBAT Solve the problem using rational numbers. SWBAT Demonstrate their ability to work collaboratively in a group.

4 Day 1: Introduction with Nana’s Lemonade
The Challenge: How many lemon wedges do you need to make the second glass of water taste the same?

5 Act 1 Show video. What’s your guess?
What’s an answer you know is too high? Too low?

6 Act 2 What information would be useful to know?
Guess the volume of the cups.

7 Volume of Cups

8 Act 3 Give students class time to work in their groups to come up with an answer to this problem. Extensions: How large would a cup be that would require an entire/lemon to keep the same lemon taste? Knowing the price of a whole lemon, how much would this drink cost(water being free along with the cup)?

9 Day 2: The Challenge: How many lemon wedges do you need to make any of the 4 given glasses taste the same? Groups of 4 will be given 4 different glasses and various size measuring cups, rulers, and water. Their task is to produce a poster answering the two questions from the task (Day 1 and Day 2 questions) Requirements: At least one graphical and one numerical representation on their poster.

10 Gallery Walk/Class Discussion
There will be a gallery walk where groups analyze and evaluate other groups’ methods of solving the task. After the gallery walk, we will have a class discussion answering any clarifying questions.

11 Formative Assessment:
Clarify Intended Learning: 3 learning objectives SWBAT Use ratio and rate reasoning to find out how many lemon wedges you would need in the large cup of water to make them taste the same. SWBAT Solve the problem using rational numbers. SWBAT Demonstrate their ability to work collaboratively in a group. Elicit Evidence: Worksheet from day 1, poster Interpret Evidence: Gallery walk Act on Evidence: Feedback during gallery walk, through rubric, and through conversations and questioning during work time.
